Description | Upon a letter, dated 16 May 1901 and numbered 4, sent by the Council of State Chairmanship, regarding the appointment of an itinerant doctor to the sanjak of Jerusalem, with a salary of 1,000 piasters. This letter and its attachments have been read and studied by our council. Among the attached documents, the statement asserted in the letter by the Beirut Medical Inspector that contagious diseases prevail in the sanjak of Jerusalem is not right. Thank Allah, the whole of the sanjak has got rid of contagious diseases. Although smallpox occurred last year, this in fact spread from Haifa, which is part of the province of Beirut, and it has fortunately disappeared now. As for the main issue, having an itinerant doctor in the sanjak of Jerusalem would be good and useful. However, the incomes of the municipal offices of the sanjak of Jerusalem are not sufficient, so it cannot afford to appoint an itinerant doctor at a salary of 1,000 piasters in addition to employing a municipal doctor as is the case in every kaza. Therefore, since there is a doctor in the center of Jerusalem other than the municipal doctor, it would be possible to temporarily employ one of them in the absence of the other. Hence, the council reached a conclusion to allot the Jerusalem municipal doctor a monthly pay of 400 piasters as an allowance from the municipal incomes of the sanjak for him to itinerate two to three times a year as the case may be and that it would be adequate to give him this task in addition to his main work.
