Description | Degree of progress in the rebuilding of the great dome. Arcades that surmount the pillars of the rotunda entirely rebuilt as they were before the fire of 1808. Reconstruction of the first base of the drum which forms the cornice which surmounts these arches. The stones of the first four foundations cut and their installation started. All the work on the drum probably finished in two and a half months from Mr. Mauss's return from Paris, with the irons, woods and weights that make up the hemispherical cap of the dome. The new team of workers. P.S. June 22, 1867. Laying six foundations of the drum of the large cupola on the eighteen foundations of which it will be formed. The stones of the upper cornice forming the first almost entirely cut foundation. (PP. 266-267) |
