Description | The Nuncio of the Holy See, in a Verbal note of 18 February, informed the Minister for Foreign Affairs that the Franciscan Fathers of the Holy Land, concerned about the unfortunate state of the Church of Bethlehem, would like to proceed with its construction, appealing to the particular interest which His Majesty the Emperor of Austria-Hungary had shown in the past in this sanctuary, and Monsignor Meglia was instructed to inquire if the Government of the Republic had no objection. Mr. Waddington informed Monsignor Meglia that the project in question could not meet opposition, if its purpose is not the construction of a new church, but the widening of the old building without touching the walls of the basilica.
