Description | A confidential letter of reprimand sent by the Grand Vizir and Riza Pasha to Haidar Pasha and Taher Pasha, announced by the Embassy, regarding the public affronts they have attempted to inflict on us on behalf of the Gate. Insufficiency of this secret, latent approach, denied by the pashas themselves, ignored by the whole of Palestine which witnessed the public offense of 27 August last. Necessity to obtain from the Gate the accomplishment of ostensible and patent acts in reparation for the public insult done to France in the name of the government of His Highness. The repair could be limited for lack of better: 1° to the insertion, in the Ottoman monitor, of an official article containing the expression of the Gate's regrets and the disavowal of the conduct of its agents; 2° to an apology visit by Taher Pasha to the French consul; 3° to the removal of the Yuzbachi. The adoption of the first of these measures seems essential to me. Without this, we will not have received any kind of reparation in the eyes of the inhabitants of Palestine. (pp. 251-252) |
