Description | He would like to report that the following incidents occurred in Madapa. a) the Arabs of Shour had a fight with the Latins and one Arab got killed. Then, the Huri notified the government. As a result, the Orthodox were blamed. b) Two months ago, Xouri Poulos the Latin (Χούρι Πούλος ο λατίνος) asked to be converted into an Orthodox Christian. His request wasn't approved so he went to the Protestants who welcomed him and sent him to Madapa, where he gathered Orthodox people and half of the Latin residents and converted them into Protestantism. They have already stopped coming to church. c) Lately, a Colonel came to Madapa with Sapam il Faez and 400 horsemen. The Colonel asked from the priest to give him the key to the water tank, which he gave to him. Then, he physically assaulted the priest and locked him up for 4 hours and ordered to send him to Damascus. But because the priest nearly died from the beating, he decided to set him free. This is why the priest wishes to report that the Orthodox asked him for the key to the water tank, saying that they are Protestants and they don't recognise the Monastery, nor the abbot, nor the priest; and that this water tank is theirs. Moreover, since he doesn't have the key any more, he will die of thirst. |

Archival history | Despite its long administrative tradition, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem created a distinct archival service only in the early twentieth century and placed it under the authority of the archigrammateas. The Historical and Paleographic Archive of the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation and its director, Agamemnon Tselikas accomplished the classification of the archives from 1988 to 1991 and their catalog was published in Greek in 1992. |
Description | Most of the material is hosted in a two-story building within the patriarchal complex and contains documents from the tenth to the late twentieth centuries. The content of the archives was continually expanded through the post-World War II period. Greek, Arabic, Ottoman Turkish |
